FIRE BLAZES AT 3623 INDIA STREET

I awoke this morning to the sound of fire engine sirens at about 5:30 AM today. I got dressed and walked down India Street to see what was going on. As soon as I reached India I could see there was a huge fire burning a couple of blocks away. There were about five or six fire trucks at the scene by this time, however they must have just arrived as I could see flames leaping from the building as I walked closer. There was also a huge amount of black smoke which meant that the firemen had not gotten much water on it. The fire originated in an office space just above the Route 44 Skateboard Shop at 3623 India Street and before firefighters were able to put it out both businesses were total losses.

I talked to a guy that had a $3,500.00 Sony DV camera mounted on a nice tripod who was taping various scenes of the fire and I learned that he will sell his footage to one of the local television stations to be broadcast on their news. He didn't want to answer my question of how much he would be paid for it, so I assume that it is rather lucrative. He probably listens to police and fire department scanners and when he hears of something substantial going down, he goes to the scene of the incident and tapes it. He probably knows several of the news producers at the six local television stations that broadcast local news and arranges to sell his footage to them. He said it didn't matter if he had 20 seconds or 20 minutes of tape because he sold it to them at a flat rate.

Complaint to CBS Sports about Randy Cross's Favoritism of the Oakland Raiders

As I watched the Oakland Raiders at the San Diego Chargers NFL game I was upset by color analyst Randy Cross's completely biased comments against the Chargers after a controversial illegal forward pass ruling by the referee during the second half. This is not the first time that Cross has expressed his preferences for the Raiders when they have played the Chargers and I think that CBS owes an apology to all Charger fans for Mr. Cross's comments. Isn't it a requirement that all CBS sportscasters not have a favorite team? Cross is an undeniable Raider fan and it is affront to every Charger fan who is subjected to his unbridled bias against San Diego! I think that CBS management should discipline Cross for this behavior or at a minimum, it should not assign Cross to broadcast Oakland vs San Diego games. It would be a shame if we were denied Dick Enberg's expert broadcast skills on account of Cross's biased opinions, so I would hope that CBS would make it clear to him to keep his personal favoritism to himself!

Still, the White House had to battle the perception that Bush was doing his party as much harm as good _ and was unwanted in some districts. The White House did not hide its irritation when the Florida GOP gubernatorial candidate, Charlie Crist, skipped a chance to campaign at Bush's side in the Florida Panhandle. Crist said his support was firm there and it made more sense to campaign elsewhere in the state.

Why not tell the truth, Crist more likely wanted to distance himself from any connection to President Bush!

I am very fortunate in that I have a sizeable stock porfolio which I am able to meet my needs by the quarterly dividends that accrue. Some of my friends are aware of my good fortune and it seems whenever they find themselves in financial difficulty, they will ask me for a timely loan. I wouldn't mind loaning them the money if it wasn't so fucking hard to get them to pay me back! As a matter of fact, one of these so-called (dead beat) friends hasn't made any effort to repay me $3,000.00 that I loaned her over a period of time while we were dating, that I'm going to have to get ugly. Sometime in January 2007, I'm going to pay her a visit and demand that she fork over her entire income tax refund for 2006. If she isn't willing to hand it over, I'll tell her that I'll have to sue her in small claims court which will more than likely end up in my garnishing her wages. This fucking bitch is living in a dream world if she thinks that she can keep postponing the repayment of this debt!

Whenever someone asks me to loan them money it seems that they all lose sight of reality when it comes to the promises that they make to repay. A good friend that I loaned $1,200.00 to a few months ago so that he could pay his overdue rent, promised that he would repay me within a couple of weeks. He never called me to tell me that the check for some work that he had done designing web sites had arrived. When I sent him an email stating my concerns he took offense to my telling him that he was not living up to his end of the bargain. I quickly muted his objections by saying that he was trying to change our original agreement after the fact that I'd loaned him the money. Since I'm going to be in his neighborhood today when I visit the barber who cuts my hair, I'm going to give him a call to see how much of the $800.00 that he still owes me he can pay today!

Another thing that seems to go with loaning friends money is that their opinion of you takes a drastic change. One would think that they would be grateful to you, even if they still hadn't repaid their debt in full, but it has been my experience that quite the opposite takes place. They don't come right out and say it but they may as well, since their treatment reflects the resentment that they have for me! Somehow, I suppose that they see their inability to repay me in a timely manner, as they agreed to at the time that they received the loan (I always allow them to state this in their own words), as somehow being my fault. They get things so fucking twisted that they can actually justify placing the blame on me and thus, make me out to be the bad guy, for their own shortcomings!

Another gripe that I have about lending money to people is that they are less willing to do me a favor should I need one. For instance, the guy who owes me $800.00 is widely known as a computer geek. He is the best technician that I've ever known and he has walked me through many a problem that I've had to resort to asking him for his help. I'm sure he knows that I will only ask him to help me as a last resort, as often times, through trial and error, I am able to find the solution to the problem that I'm having on my own (which is much more gratifying). It has been over two weeks now that Windows XP Pro SP2 crashed on my PC. I've had this happen before and in a worst case scenario I have always been able to wipe out all the data on my hard drive and reload the OS. This last time, however, whenever I try to reinstall XP Pro the installation process hangs. I've repalced the hard drive and the memory with new hardware and it still hangs. I was able to install Windows ME without a hitch and I've tried to upgrade ME to XP Pro without success. I've made this known to my geek friend and he has yet to offer his help. I mean the guy owes me $800.00 that was supposed to be repaid months ago, although he has offered to pay interest (which I have declined up to this point), but he can't show me his gratitude by offering to give me hand diagnosing why XP Pro will not install. May be he thinks I deserve to have to suffer through my problem since he can't repay me when he promised he would, I don't know, but it seems to me, if he were truly grateful for my helping him out of a jam, that he would be more than happy to help me out with my problem. As things stand at this point, I'm going to ask him to read this blog entry and then wait to hear what he has to say. Who knows, may be I'm missing something? I doubt it, though!

I wrote an email to the KPBS show "Full Focus" last night making the suggestion that MCRD is the logical choice for the expansion of Lindberg Field rather than relocating it to the Marine Air Base at Miramar. To my surprise, Gloria Penner, the host of "Full Focus", read my email on tonight's show. Word for word!

I do not wish to subtract anything when it comes to the treatment of our wounded soldiers fighting an unwinable war in Iraq, but I would like you to ponder this for a moment: Think about how the federal government could improve the lives of all Americans if we weren't wasting billions of dollars in Iraq?

RAM: Remaking American medicine health care quality improvement These people have made a four part series airing on PBS that I highly recommend! Tonight's episode made some glaring facts known to me that I had no idea existed. For instance: Only 20% of America's MDs use computers as a part of their practice; and it would take 10 to 20 years to have a national healthcare network in place! How can that be? Hospitals and health insurance providers are the culprits. Whenever a doctor hospitalizes a patient he manual writes a medical report in which he proscribes treatment and medications. (This brings up the bad joke about trying to read a doctor's handwriting.) He gives this report to a nurse who enters it into a computer which means that there are many errors made in the transcription. What is needed is software that would allow the doctor to enter this information himself. 10 to 20 years before there could be a national health network setup! Do you think that the Pentagon would wait any longer than a year? C'mon, America! It's time to demand that our representatives in Washington begin spending our tax dollars on Americans! Not on killing innocent people in Iraq!

Can you guess the race?

Now that it is football season I have a little game that I play when I watch a televised game. Some people may thing that it is racist but I honestly don't think it is racist at all, if anything, I think that it has do to with America's cultural heritage. 

The game is to guess which race that the interviewed player is without looking at the TV screen.  In other words, can you tell what a person's race is by listening to them speak?  I've begun to try this with most voices that I identify as being spoken by an African-American, an Hispanic, an Asiatic, etc., speaker.

I wonder why the African-American has such a distinctive style of speach as compared to an African born and raised in the UK or a native African.  Often, I am unable to understand the speach of an African-American, whereas the speach of other Africans is easily understandable.

Why is this, I wonder.  All of these athletes are currently enrolled in college and they have to have passing grades in order to be able to compete, or, if they are professionals, then a large percentage of them have graduated from college.  And yet, I can't understand them when they speak.

To those who think this is racist, I would say that their speach has very little to do with genetics, and has everything to do with their cultural surroundings.  Remember back a few years ago when the controversy of euphonics arose.

I wonder what the status on euphonics is these days, anyone know?

David Remnick, editor of the New Yorker has a keen view of ex-President Bill Clinton's current life, but he fails to mention, nor does Charlie Rose ask about how the status of Clinton's golf game. I want to know how often he gets to play these days, at which courses, and what his handicap is!

One thing about Clinton, even though the right wing was trying their damnest to scandalize him throughout the “White Water” debacle, he and his administration were transparent. He had credibility, even though he lied about Monica Lewinsky, which in my opinion, is understandable and forgiveable. Whereas, current President G.W. Bush and his administration cannot be believed. America will have to pay for Bush's, and all his cronies, lies for decades to come!

Last Tuesday morning I was riding my bicycle around downtown San Diego trying to locate a 99-cent store in order to buy a quart of transmission fluid for my 1973 Oldsmobile Royale. After finding one on the corner of 7th & Broadway, I decided to pedal down to Petco Park (home of the Padres). I entered the "Park within the Park" area and checked out the view from the bleachers. I walked down one of the aisles until I reached field level and then I tried to locate the Padres' bullpen. As I walked in the direction of the bullpen, I came to a fence that had the batting practice cage behind. The reason that I mention this is because later that night during the Padres vs. Colorado Rockies game, Padre catcher, Mike Piazza, hit a towering home run over the center field fence. The ball landed exactly on the spot where I had been standing while checking out the batting cage only hours before! Coincidental? Yes, but it was a strange sensation, none-the-less!

As I have no need to own a cell phone I refuse to own one, therefore, I can't take part in a survey that I'm going to take. There is a tentative cease fire between Israel and Lebanon. U.N. troops should be taking control over northern Lebanon after Israeli troops complete their withdrawal sometime tomorrow. Hopefully, calmer heads will prevail! What I fail to understand about this is why U.S. President Bush is so quick to claim this as a victory for Israel . Hezballah claims it as a victory over Israel. Why can't these people say it is a victory for peace! I count the days for when Bush's administration finally ends. The damage that he has caused to America's image will last for decades. He has bankrupted America for what? His presidency is an embarassment.

Google "FIRESTORM 2003" This is the name being given by KGTV (ABC) Channel 10 to the disastrous two days of fires burning out of control throughout San Diego County. Channel 10 is sponsoring a telethon to raise money for the victims which will be given to the American Red Cross. Governor Gray Davis made a very gracious appearance at the telethon and he even took a few calls. He said that he was proud to have been the governor of this great state of California and that Governor-Elect Arnold would be picking-up where he left off. It should be pointed out that he said that he had been in contact with the White House, but had only spoken to a White House spokesperson as of 10:00PM Sunday night. Damn President Bush! He is a SOB of the first order! I have yet to hear him utter a single word concerning this horrendous disaster which only reinforces my belief that he is a puny whimp. He is a vindictive, spiteful, ungenerous, unforgiving, idiot! He has let his pea-sized brain allow an excellent opportunity to gain the respect and, more importantly their votes. of Californians pass him by. In fact, the only time he seems to visit California is when he is able to raise campaign money at Republican sponsored events. I hope and pray that he will be defeated in 2004. He has damaged this country far into the future and another four years as president would probably lead to him trying to become a dictator. He is a dangerous man.

It is about three hours from the day I came into this world, 51 years ago in Big Spring, Texas. Wow, I'm definitely a middle-aged person, unmarried, unattached, no kids, the only baggage that I've acquired is a friend's 9 year old cat by the name of "Annie Boy". He got that odd name because when he was named, "he" was supposed to be a "she' by the name of "Annie".

I called my old friend Sharon up a few minutes ago and told her that I'd moved and gave her my new phone number and address. It had been over a year since I last spoke to her because it has been close to a year since I first got the place where I currently live. I'm supposed to call her tomorrow at 11:00 AM and then I'll try to get her to go out with me somewhere.

Hmm, where would that be? I know, some dive bar where we can have a few drinks and shoot some pool. The Catalina Lounge or the Arizona Cafe come to mind, or some other dive in Ocean Beach. It will be good to see her again! I wonder if she'll have a little glass with me? Then some mixed drinks or beers! I hope that she'll loosen up enough to where she'd be receptive to a move that I think that I'd like to make on her! It sure would be a nice birthday present if she's up to it!

These sort of thoughts that I have for her began years ago when she came to my shop on Rosecrans one afternoon. I've never seen her act the way she did that afternoon, before or since, and I wonder if she has any memory of it at all, because it was strange, to say the least. She wasn't out of it, but she was acting strange, like she was in a dream state almost. I was asleep when she arrived and once she came into my room, she immediately wanted to suck my cock and fuck. The point being, is that I loaned her $100.00 about two years ago, and she has never repaid me any of it. Does she think that it was a gift?

I don't care how much money that I have, I'm not in the habit of just giving it away like that! Suppose we get naked, and then we can discuss it at some other time. I got a call from a friend who I had given a PC to a few years ago when I upgraded. It has served her and her 2 teenagers quite well, but whenever they have a problem with it, they call me and expect me to come over to fix it. They still have not learned, although I have tried to explain and show them a number of times, how to run "Scandisk" and then "Defragment" their 6.3GB HD.

Anyway, the call had to do with not having a mouse! How ironic that I had spent hours yesterday resolving my own mouse problems! The first thing that I suggested was to turn it off by using the master power switch, waiting about a minute and then, making sure that the mouse is properly plugged in, reboot.

Since it has been over an hour since I got the call, I suppose that this has resolved their mouse problems. It pisses me off that I hadn't thought of trying this until it had become one of my last resorts!

The only consolation to the whole affair is that I will definately remember to do this at the very beginning of resolving any problems with any PC that I may come across in the future. It's not a question of if that time will come, because we all know that it eventually will. The only question is when will it happen next?

We hope to gather several more tales of what appears to be a system that's out of control. I will keep you posted as the story unfolds -- and you are so right about parking enforcement officers acting like "robots"!

Having lived in San Diego for about 40 of the past 41-years of the 50 that I've racked up, I have received my share of parking citations from the Parking Enforcement Division of the San Diego Police Department. Here are a few suggestions that I think would be of interest to your readers that you may wish to consider while developing your story:

1. Ask any Parking Enforcement Officer if there is anything in their job description that contains a clause about "ethical behavior"? I tried this tactic in a polite manner to a male Parking Enforcement Officer one day on India Street and all it got me was having to jump out of the way of the front tire of the three-wheeled rig that he was driving, as he rudely exited my presence without saying a word in response.

I think it is a fair and a pertinent question to ask because it has been my experience that none of them have any concept of ethical behavior. In fact, all of the Parking Enforcement Officers that I've ever come in contact with seemed to react to me as if they were some sort of robot. They all had standard replies and not one of them would take a minute or two from their busy schedules to hear me out.

2. Knowing about their policy of impounding a vehicle if it is found to have five outstanding tickets, saved me from having my vehicle impounded on one occasion but it nearly cost me a misdemeanor charge of intentionally disregarding the order of the Parking Enforcement Officer who was standing at the rear of my Dodge van, on her radio, requesting that a tow truck be sent.

Honestly, I never heard her command me to stop. I walked past her and when I overheard her conversation on her radio, I intentionally removed myself from her sightline, while entering the vehicle, starting it, and then driving away. I saw this action as being my only recourse because I had two days before been to the DMV to register the vehicle.

The DMV gladly accepted my check which included payment for the four outstanding tickets and the current registration fees. I had the documentation proving that I had paid these tickets along with the new registration inside my glove compartment which I would have shown the officer, but I knew that it would be a fruitless task since the DMV had not cleared these tickets with the Parking Enforcement database (why else would she be calling to impound my van?).

I drove about a mile or so on Congress St. in Old Town, when I saw two San Diego Police squad cars approaching from the opposite direction. The high rate of speed that they were traveling, along with their lights flashing, made me think that they were going to some sort of emergency or that they were in pursuit of a dangerous suspect.

When they came even to me, the first one waved me over, while the second blocked the road if I chose to not comply. I parked the van, grabbed the DMV documents, and exited the vehicle. I told the officer, who was the driver of the first car, that I held the documentation that would explain everything. I handed them to him, along with my driver's license, while the two officers from the second car sized me up and down as if I was going to resist them.

At one point, the officer who had the documentation asked me to point out to him what it meant. Stapled to the renewed registration was a print out of the four parking violations; including times and dates, citation numbers, codes violated, amount of the fine, penalties for late payment, etc. Most importantly, each violation stated that they had been paid, and their totals were reflected on the print out of the total fees paid.

At that point, the officer discussed this with the other two, and fortunately he prevailed over what they thought they should do. They stated that they were ready to place me under arrest for the misdemeanor that they felt that I had committed. When I heard this, I became outraged and asked them how my actions could be a misdemeanor. They answered that I had intentionally disobeyed the command of the Parking Enforcement Officer. I said that I never heard her say a word, nor did she pursue me when I had driven away.

They responded by saying that they will listen to what the Parking Enforcement Officer had to say, once she arrived. I suppose that she must have waited for the tow truck to arrive because it took her about twenty minutes to show up and the tow truck was just behind her.

I was never given a chance to speak to her, the two officers from the second car did and recommended that I be given a misdemeanor citation, and then they left. The policeman with my DMV printouts next spoke to her and I could see that he was having a difficult time convincing her that these had been paid. However when the citation numbers matched the ones that said were still outstanding, she had to back down.

The policeman told me that she would agree not to have my van impounded on condition that she could issue me a ticket for a timed violation. I asked him if he was going to issue the misdemeanor citation against me if I accepted her citation. He said no, I got the parking citation, and drove away.

Do you think that had the van been towed, and I showed that the tickets had been paid prior to the Parking Enforcement Department's database had been updated with this information, that I could have gotten the van released without paying the impound fee?

Hell no!

Would I have any recourse for seeking compensation for this error?

It is doubtful!

It doesn't stop there though. Approximately three months later, at the beginning of a new year, I received a telephone call from someone who works for the Revenue and Recovery Division of the City of San Diego demanding payment for the four citations I've just described along with interest penalties. I said that this must be some sort of bad joke, because I had paid the tickets three months ago as a condition of having my vehicle registration renewed.

He didn't want to believe me at first, but I said that if he wanted me to come to his office and show him the documentation of this or if he wanted me to mail him copies of it, that I would. At that point he backed off and said that he would check into this and that he would get back to me.

He called the next day and said that although the citations had been paid, I was still in arrears for the interest penalties that had accrued. I became angry at this point, and asked him for what period the interest had been charged for. He said for the previous three months. Then I asked him if he was serious because why should I be charged any interest on something that I had already paid for. I said that if anyone should pay any interest for that period of time it should be the DMV because they were the ones who had collected the money and that it was not my problem if the City of San Diego had not gotten their money from the State of California.

He disagreed and asked me when I would pay the $39.00 in interest. I said that I would never pay it. He said that I would. I said "Good Bye".

I recently rented an apartment and had to submit to a credit check. Sure enough, the City of San Diego has filed a claim on my credit for each of the three years since this whole thing occurred!

What a bunch of idiots!

I went to bed about 2:00 AM after the FA/18 game I was playing blacked out the screen upon exiting. I rebooted and went to sleep. When I awoke at about 8:00 the PC was asleep and as I couldn't get it to render a screen, I rebooted. That's when I discovered that I had no mouse!

I tried unplugging and replugging it in several times. No dice! I tried a system restore, selecting a date at the end of July. Nada? From the "Device Manager" I learned that the mouse had a conflicting resource at IRQ 12 (I thought that a mouse didn't require an interrupt) and the conflicting hardware was my Radeon 9000 video card (which normally uses IRQ 5). Something had gotten way out of kilter!

I uninstalled the video card and the mouse from "Device Manager", forcing a reboot. Each time I rebooted, Windows immediately recognized new hardware and installed drivers for it, without even giving me a choice to install them or not. To get around that I had to uninstall the Ati software. When I reinstalled it, each time it used IRQ 5, but after rebooting it switched to IRQ 12. Total bull shit!

I went through this crap, over and over again, for about three hours, and then I had to run an errand. When I got home a couple of hours later, I repeated all of the above and decided to use the master power switch during reboots. I don't know if that was the solution, but it worked the first time. Go figure!

In the future, I will use the master power switch, whenever I'm spending any time in PC hell! It's a new SOP!

A couple of weeks ago I visited a friend that I've known for close to 30-years now. It had been about a month since I had last seen him and during that time I had dyed my hair a dark brown. I had sort of gotten used to how it made me look 10 years younger, but it was new to him and he kept on telling me that if I lost about 30 lbs., I'd be a "lady killer". I told him about how easy the dye job had been and I suggested that he should try some for himself. I was surprised to see that he had purchased some hair dye when I visited him last Saturday. Since he is married he doesn't need to look younger to attract any females' attentions, and so I thought that he would never take my suggestion seriously and actually dye his hair!

I should take his advice about losing some weight because it would certainly improve my overall appearence greatly! Not only would I look better, but more importantly, I know that I would feel a whole lot better about myself! So I will begin to watch my diet and get a couple of work outs in every week.

I'm going to fix the flats on my mountain bike and try riding it for at least half an hour every day, golf a couple of times a week, and go for a couple of swimming sessions at the beach every week, too! Depending upon how my ears handle the water, I might even buy a new surfboard and begin surfing again! God, it's been at least 10 years since I last surfed, but I've paid my dues, and with a little paddling around each time I go out, I think that I can get myself into good enough shape to be able to get some waves.

WHOA! It's been a long time since I've been back to my very own "Bobsblog". It's been over a year, could it be two? I was reminded of it a few minutes ago when I pressed on the "Blogging Post" Icon that is part of the Google Tool Bar that attaches to your browser. As I recall, it was a major hassle for me to post anything to my blog because I had to FTP it, and I could never get my FTP client configured properly to transfer my blogging updates. I sort of got the impression, at the time, that this problem had something to do with SouthWest Bell, who was providing my DSL connection back then. It's all pretty vague just what exactly was causing me the problems.

The good news is, that Blogger remembered my log in and password. Better yet, I have been a very happy subscriber to Cox Cable for my connection to the internet, my telephone, and my cable television for the past year. My connection speed totally smokes what I was able to get from SWB (750 KB/sec vs 1.6 MB/sec). If anyone that happens to read this ever has to make a choice for their ISP between DSL or Cable, choose cable. Cable is far cheaper when you average the download rates into your monthly fee!

Cho Oyu 2000 Expedition on climb.mountainzone.com This is a great hazard of routes that have many climbers. Camp 1 is dotted with hundreds of brown spots and deposits of TP. Flying feces from last week's windstorms has left a microscopic bacterial wasteland covering the entire camp. I do not think boiling your melted snow water is a safe guarantee, for at that altitude one would have to continually boil one's water for over 20 minutes. A non-practicality when fuel is limited. We all plan to bring iodine pills in the future.

Chances are that naked chick isn't going anywhere. . but she still has her high heels on. because the floors are cold and dirty and disgusting, and i personally don't feel very sexy when i point my toes towards the ceiling and they're filthy, covered in dirt, lint, and dust bunnies between the toes - GROSSSSSS!!! i'm a neatfreak, and just the though makes my skin CRAWL!!!! ewwwwwwwwww!!
